Indian President Pranab Mukherjee has said the relationship between New Delhi and Dhaka is “exemplary in many ways”.

He made the statement when officer trainees of Bangladesh Foreign Service, who are attending a special course at India’s Foreign Service Institute in New Delhi, called on him yesterday.

Welcoming the young Bangladeshi future diplomats at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Pranab Mukherjee said he was delighted to see so many young faces from Bangladesh Foreign Service.

Terming the young officer trainees as worthy representatives of a great nation, he said “They will bring new ideas and a new system of governance,” according to an official statement.

The Indian president emphasised that creating a happy society is the responsibility of modern governance and said he was confident that the future diplomats would be able to carry forward the legacy of trust and amity between Bangladesh and India as they pursue their career.

“It is heartening to see impressive strides made by Bangladesh on human development, healthcare, education, women empowerment and other socio-economic fronts,” Mukherjee said adding that India attaches the highest importance to its relations with Bangladesh.

“A close neighbour and with which we share a lot in common, Bangladesh is India’s closest friend and relationship between the two countries is exemplary in many ways,” he said.

“India and Bangladesh share a common bond of history, language, culture and strong people-to-people ties. This shared history unites us in unique and special ways,” Mukherjee added.
