New cars this week

Hyundai Elantra. One of the models currently offered by Fair Technology Limited.

The designers at Hyundai are either up to something revolutionary or just being downright lazy. Their new sedan, the 2021 Elantra, looks like a rough 3D render with lots of unbevelled edges. The depressions on the doors and front fender resemble damage models form the early 2000's racing game while the front grille gives the impression of the car wearing a facemask, which is tragically trendy. Still, the car does come with a fuel-efficient 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and Hyundai's usual above-its-price-range upmarket features. Beauty is to the eye of the beholder, just be ready for local "experts" telling you to fix your car daily.

The new Swift sport is here, and it's now a hybrid. That's right, Clarkson's favourite hatchback now comes with a 48V Hybrid Powertrain that knocks up the 0-100 time by a solid second. On the bright side, the powertrain gives the 1.4-litre booster jet engine a 173 lb-ft. of torque boost at less than 2,000rpm and with a curb weight of only 1,025 kg, it is still one of the lightest cars around. Will this hybrid powertrain finally convince our grey market gods to import a few of these? We sure hope so, as 21 the kilometre per litre range will make it much easier to explain our fuel bill to our significant other.
