TIB report

TIB report

Take in the message, don't shoot the messenger

THE vituperative reaction from some of the members of the parliament on the recently published report of the TIB does not surprise us at all. In fact it has been the lot of the corruption watchdog during every regime to be excoriated by the ruling party for publishing reports that did not meet with their approval. The BNP did the same while it was in power and now it is the turn of the AL.
This time the TIB report has revealed the among other things performance of the 9th Parliament in terms of participation of the opposition, lack of quorum, and time spent on the discussion and passage of a bill, and put that into monetary terms. The report has been critical of the performance of the opposition and the ruling party. While the BNP is largely responsible for making the parliament dysfunctional, we wonder what rationale does the AL have to have caused the quorum crisis in spite of having more than two-thirds  majority?
We are surprised that the MPs and even the law minister should take umbrage at the action of the TIB which has collated data that are open and the source of which is the parliament secretariat itself and brought it to public knowledge. And stating that the parliament is presently bereft of an opposition in the real sense the TIB has only stated the obvious and has indeed reflected the mind of a vast majority of the people of the country who would want the situation to be righted.
It would be well for the AL to absorb the underlying message of the report instead of shooting the messenger.
