Thousands suffer as road is in awful condition
Thousands of people of seven villages in Rajapur upazila under the district are badly suffering as five km Pukurijana-Bashtola-Mankisundor road has remained in an awful condition for years.
The residents of Pukurijana, Mankisundar, Napiterhat, Mathbari, Daharshankor, Indrapasa and Bashtola villagers are facing communication problem as the road constructed in 2002 has not seen any repair work, said locals.
The metalled road now looks like a muddy one while several culverts and bridges on the road cannot be used by vehicles as the approach roads are very rough and low, they said.
"Often accidents occur on the road. A few months ago, I was going to school, riding a bike on the road when it fell in a large pothole," said Md Ali Akbar, headmaster of Daharshankor Primary School.
“We cannot use the road in rainy season as it becomes muddy at places. I have a bicycle but I cannot use it for going to school due to miserable condition of the road," said Zakir, a schoolboy of Pukhurijana village.
Patients become the worst sufferers when they need to be taken to the health complex. I repeatedly requested the local MP for repairing the road but to no effect,” said Jahidul Islam, chairman of Mathbari union parishad.
Nazrul Islam, upazila engineer of Local Government Engineering Department, said, “Several times we informed the higher authorities of the matter and sent project proposal in this regard but we are yet to get any response.”
