They shine in SSC, defying social stigma

Fighting all odds, six boys and girls belonging to neglected and marginalised Harijon community in the district have come out successful with good results in the SSC examinations this year.
They are Jhinuk Rani (GPA-4.81), Protima Rani (GPA-4.06), Sikha Rani GPA-2.69), Priya Rani Biswas (GPA-4.00), Asha Bashphore (GPA-3.61), Gupin Kumar Sarker (GPA-3.25).
“My parents wanted to marry me off at an early age but I remained firm in my decision to continue study. Now I have got the result of my endeavour,” said Jhinuk Rani as tear of joy rolled down from her eyes.
"Earlier schools did not allow admission of Harijan students. Even if a few were allowed enrolment, they were neglected by teachers and fellow students. Now the situation has changed,” Gupin Kumar said.
The Harijon people, struggling for ages to claim their rightful place in the mainstream society, now see gradual improvement in their condition, thanks to the initiative of local NGO FAIR that works with the financial cooperation of Manusher Jonno Foundation.
A group of local people under the banner of Advocacy Group have extended support for the purpose.
Their initiative has already ensured hundred percent schooling for all the children of around 3500 people of the community living in seven 'colonies' at different places of the district.
Now 240 boys and girls of the community are studying in schools and colleges.
