Thakurgaon upazila polls suspended

Thakurgaon upazila polls suspended

The Election Commission has suspended election to Thakurgaon Sadar upazila, which was scheduled for tomorrow, following a High Court directive for postponement.

The election was scheduled to be held on March 31 along with 73 other upazilas across the country in the fifth and final phase of the upazila election.

The HC directive came on March 19 after a vice chairman aspirant filed a writ petition complaining regarding 28 polling centres, Ashfaqur Rahman, senior election secretary to the Election Secretariat, told The Daily Star.

Earlier, BNP-led 19-paty backed candidate Md Alamgir filed the petition stating that the authorities had changed the location of 28 polling centres out of total 169 which may cause suffering for the voters, reports our Thakurgaon correspondent.

During the hearing on March 19, the HC suspended the election for the next three months, Returning Officer Manjur Alam Pradhan told the correspondent.
