TCB to sell essentials in Ramadan

TCB to sell essentials in Ramadan

The government will sell essential commodities across the country at subsidised rates before and during the fasting month of Ramadan to keep the prices stable, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed told parliament yesterday.
Replying to queries from a band of lawmakers, he said Trading Corporation of Bangladesh would sell essentials at different parts of the country using 174 trucks.
In a scripted reply, Tofail said TCB allocates sugar, lentil and edible oils to its 3,032 appointed dealers at least once a month to keep stable the commodity prices.
“Essential commodities will be sold in three phases—15 days before the Ramadan, first week and in the middle of the month,” he told the House.
Besides, 10 retail outlets will sell essential items, the minister mentioned.
In reply to another query, he said the commerce ministry had engaged 14 vigilance teams to monitor prices of essentials on the kitchen market.
Tofail said his ministry has requested Bangladesh Bank to make easier the opening of letters of credit (LCs) for importing essential commodities.
The ministries concerned have also been asked to ensure smooth transportation of essential items during Ramadan, Tofail added.
He also said that city corporations and all deputy commissioners have been directed to put on display the prices of essentials at marketplaces.
