A Dhaka court today sent Mahmuda Akter, chairperson of Tazreen Fashions Ltd, to jail rejecting her bail petition in a homicide case.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Kazi Shahidul Islam passed the order when Mahmuda sought the bail through her lawyer after surrendering before the court.
On March 20, the District and Sessions Judge's Court cancelled Mahmuda's bail and asked her to surrender in 15 days before the Senior Judicial Magistrate Court that granted her bail.
Earlier today, in line with the court directives, Mahmuda surrendered before the court.
The case was filed over a deadly fire incident at the factory on November 24, 2012, that killed at least 112 readymade garment workers at Ashulia, on the outskirt of the capital.
Mahmuda and her husband Delwar Hossain, also managing director of Tazreen Fashions Ltd, have been facing in the same lawsuit for their negligence to ensure adequate safety measures in the factory that caused several casualties in the blaze.
According to the charge sheet, they have been shown guilty as they constructed the building violating the commercial building code.
In the first-ever move in the country to prosecute garment factory owners for a factory fire, police in December last year pressed homicide charges against 13 people, including Delwar and Mahmuda.
