Tareque, Arif all along involved

Former Rab officials Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad and Maj Arif Hossain were involved in the Naryanganj seven-murder from beginning till end, a Rab probe has found.

“A group of Rab members led by Tareque and Arif worked for councillor Nur Hossain to abduct and kill his archrival councillor Nazrul Islam,” a member of the Rab probe team told The Daily Star yesterday.

“But the Rab team had to abduct and kill six others as they witnessed Nazrul's abduction.”

The Rab headquarters and its intelligence wing failed to rescue the seven alive because then Rab-11 commanding officer Tareque created obstacles, he added.

Of the victims, four were with Nazrul in a car during the abduction while advocate Chandan Sarker along with his driver was passing by in another car. They were all killed on April 27; their bodies were later found floating in the Shitalakkhya river.

Another Rab official, Lt Commander SM Masud Rana, was involved in the Nazrul killing mission till the abduction, said the probe body member.

Tareque, Arif and Rana, all dismissed from the army, are now behind bars in connection with the murder case.

The probe report will be submitted to the High Court bench of Justice Md Rezaul Haque and Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore on December 10.

Earlier on November 23, the four-member probe team sent the report to the Attorney General's Office for placing it to the HC, said Deputy Attorney General ASM Nazmul Haque yesterday. He, however, declined to disclose contents of the report.
