A Habiganj court yesterday sent Sylhet City Corporation Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury to jail after he surrendered before it in connection with former finance minister SAMS Kibria murder case.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Rokeya Akhter passed the order around noon after rejecting his bail prayer. Ariful surrendered before the court around 10:15am, sources said.

The same court on December 28 had sent Habiganj Municipality Mayor Golam Kibria Gaus, also general secretary of district BNP, to jail in the Kibria murder case after he surrendered before it.

Later that day, BNP activists brought out processions in the district, protesting the court order and a clash ensued between BNP activists and law enforcers that left at least 40 people injured, including six police men.

Earlier on December 21, a Habiganj court issued arrest warrants for 11 people, including Ariful, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia's former political secretary Harris Chowdhury, and Habiganj Mayor Golam Kibria, in the case.

All of them were shown absconding in the third supplementary charge sheet submitted to the court by CID Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Meherunnesa Parul on November 13.

SAMS Kibria was assassinated in a grenade attack while addressing a rally in Habiganj on January 27, 2005. The blast also killed Kibria's nephew Shah Manzur Huda, local AL leader Abdur Rahim and two others.
