Sust BCL withdraws strike till Saturday

Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) has withdrawn their indefinite strike protesting an attack on its two leaders in Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust) till Saturday.
Classes and examinations have not held today at Sust as the activists of university unit BCL called for the indefinite strike on the campus protesting the attack last night.
They withdrew the indefinite strike after getting assurance from Sust Vice-Chancellor Md Aminul Haque Bhuiyan around 1:00pm that police will take action to arrest the attackers immediately, reports our Sylhet correspondent quoting Niloy Chandra Sarkar, assistant proctor of the university.
“We have talked with police and they will take action to arrest the culprits,” VC told the BCL activists who also put barricade on the Sylhet-Sunamganj road this morning.
They also withdrew the blockade on the Sylhet-Sunamganj road near the university.
The protesters padlocked the main entrance of the university forcing the campus’s transport movement to a halt in the morning.
Uttam Das, BCL central committee member, also a final year student of social works department, and Ainul Islam of anthropology department, came under attack by some miscreants at a restaurant in front of the main gate around 10:10pm, police said.
Soon after the incident, the BCL activists torched a vehicle and vandalised at least 20 vehicles in the area.
Seriously injured Uttam was shifted to Square Hospitals in Dhaka from local hospital in Sylhet, Sust assistant proctor Niloy Chandra Sarkar told The Daily Star.
He sustained stab wounds on arms and on left leg while Ainul was minor injured, he added.
Police detained Zabedur Rahman, secretary of school affairs of Sust unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir, from a student mess at Dhamalipara near the campus.
Police found some text SMSs about the attack on his mobile, said Md Akhter Hossain, officer in charge of Jalalabad Police Station.
Additional police have been deployed on the campus to avoid any untoward incident, he added.
