A fresh breeze is blowing as we step into a brand New Year, it is a tentative breeze of hope, expectation and possibility. We have gone through a tumultuous few months and there is no hope that peace will reign in this troubled land. But with the advent of the Bangla New Year our hearts feel the pull of the fertile soil and the ancient roots that we are innately tied to. This Pahela Baishakh we remind our readers the catchy rhythm of the Gazir Gaan, the wisdom of soothsayer Khona, the wonder of Bangla folktales and the remarkable origin of the celebration of first day of the first month. The fascinating oral tradition of a bygone era and the diversity of our cultural heritage are evident in the varied ways different communities celebrate this auspicious beginning. These primordial treasures are enmeshed with our contemporary psyche reinforcing the secular spirit of this most colourful, vibrant and exhilarating of festivals. Shubho Naboborsho to our dear readers!
