Sultan's 20th death anniversary observed

Legendary artist SM Sultan's 20th death anniversary was observed yesterday in Narail. In memory of the maestro, the district administration and SM Sultan Foundation jointly organised a daylong programme at his birthplace Masimdia village under Narail Municipality.

The programme included placing wreaths at his grave at Sultan Complex, milad mahfil, children's painting competition and prize giving ceremony at Shishu Swargo followed by a discussion at the same venue. Hundreds of children of Shishu Swargo participated in the competition.

The discussion was presided over by Anondo Kumar Biswas A.D.C (Gen) while Abdul Goffar Khan, Deputy Commissioner of Narail and also the president of Sultan Foundation, was the chief guest.

Among others, Ashiqur Rahman Miku, member secretary of Sultan Foundation, Iqbal Hossain Sikder, former secretary general of Sultan Foundation and Professor Munshi Hafizur Rahman were present as special guests.

The chief guest, in his speech, focused on the contributions of the legendary artist in taking Bangladeshi art to the global platform. Sultan's glorious achievements brought him international recognition as a painter. Throughout his life he drew inspiration from grassroots people.

Sultan was conferred the Ekushey Padak. Cambridge University declared him the 'Man of Asia' in 1984. He was also honoured with Charushilpi Sangsad Sammanona in 1986 and Shadhinata Padak in 1993.

The master painter breathed his last on October 10, 1994 at Jessore Combined Military Hospital.
