Students form human chain near Khaleda’s office

This undated filed photo shows people in front of the office of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at Gulshan in Dhaka.

Several hundred students of three educational institutions, their guardians and teachers yesterday formed a human chain in front of BNP chief’s Gulshan office demanding withdrawal of ongoing blockade and hartal to help them sit for the SSC examinations without any disruption.
Local Chhatra league, Juba League, Mohila League also took part in the human chain programme lasted for half an hour from 11:00am.
Students of Cambrian School and College, Kalachandpur High Scholl and Gulshan Model School and College formed the human chain carrying play cards with the inscription saying no to hartal and blockade, saving the future of students’ and we want peace.
Of the three, Gulshan Model School is several yards away from Khaleda’s political office where she has been staying since January 3.
Prior to the human chain programme, local MP and president of Bangladesh Nationalist Forum Abul Kalam Azad called upon the 20-party alliance to withdraw the hartal and blockade programme considering future of the children.
Mostafa Jaman, principal of Gulshan Model School said SSC examinees of his institutions passing their days in fear and uncertainty whether they will be able to appear before the exams and then return home safely.
Kazali Rahman, a guardian, said they have broken down mentally as their children are facing impediments due to hartal and street violence.
Anamika Chisty, a student said they call upon country’s two top most leaders to resolve the ongoing crisis for the sake of the country.
Earlier on January 31, students of a school in Dhaka’s Badda formed a human chain near Khaleda Zia’s office on the same demands.
Today is the 30th day of nationwide blockade sponsored by the BNP-led 20-party alliance and the fourth day of its countrywide hartal (shutdown).
The SSC exams which were scheduled to begin from February 2 have already been deferred twice because of the hartal spell.
BNP, it seems, is at an uncompromising tone regarding withdrawal of hartals for SSC exams.
