State minister terms it an accident!

In an apparent attempt to save the law enforcers responsible for maiming Limon Hossain, State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan yesterday termed the 2011 shooting of the innocent boy an accident.
Asked about the call of Human Rights Watch for the government to prosecute the responsible Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) men, the minister told reporters at his secretariat office that the accident had happened when Rab was conducting a raid to arrest a notorious criminal.
The fact is a member of a Rab team raiding Limon's village in Jhalakathi shot him point-blank in his left leg above the knee on March 23, 2011 taking him for a criminal.
Four days later, the injured leg of the college student at the time had to be amputated to save his life.
Sultana Kamal, executive director of rights body Ain O Salish Kendra, said, "Had it been an accident Rab would not have filed four false cases against Limon, which proved that the shooting incident was intentional. Responsible Rab men should be tried."
HRW on Tuesday said Bangladesh government should prosecute the Rab members responsible for the attack on Limon, which caused him to lose a leg.
The authorities have finally dropped politically-motivated charges against Limon, but have not taken any action against his attackers, said the New York-based rights body in a report posted on its website.
It also urged the government to order an independent investigation into the incident.
