NEARS organises discussion on sexual and reproductive health

NEARS Bangladesh, in collaboration with Marie Stopes and Plan International Bangladesh, organised a discussion on the dispersion of knowledge and practice of SHRH and Gender Equality among adolescents recently, at Hotel Lakeshore. The discussion emphasised on the importance Sexual and Reproductive Health Right (SRHR) among adolescents.  Over 50 participants from different walks of life participated in the discussion.

"NEARS is a network working since 2004 to raise awareness in adolescents regarding their sexual rights and hygiene. It is important for them to understand the changes in their bodies after they reach a certain age. In this way, they can not only take care of their health in a better way, but also protect their sexual rights," said Kazi Samsur Alam in his welcome speech.

Dr Farhana Ahmad, Director, Eternal Relations and New Business Development, Marie Stopes Bangladesh, also spoke. "In a society where the word 'sex' is a taboo, speaking about SRHR seems impossible. However, that does not reduce its importance or necessity. Discussing such issues in an open platform is the only way to eliminate stereotypical attitudes," she said.

Md Shawkat Hossain Khan, Member Secretary of NEARS and Project Manager at Marie Stopes Bangladesh, presented a video, showcasing the journey of NEARS.

Finally, the keynote speaker Imtiaz Pavel, Vice President, NEARS Bangladesh, conducted an important discussion, during which he analysed SRHR and gender equality among adolescents.

After this session, the floor was open to all for group discussions, facilitated by Halima Begum, Executive Committee Member, NEARS.  The event concluded with a vote of thanks from DrAnanya Asad and Shawkat Hossain Khan.
