NDUB Language Centre inaugurated

To support the students in building a stronger competence in English, Notre Dame University Bangladesh (NDUB) inaugurated the NDUB Language Centre on January 24, 2019. It is located on campus and is free for any member of the NDUB community who wants to enhance their language proficiency in terms of  English listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Before the inauguration ceremony, a workshop titled 'Education and Beyond' was organised at Moreau Square, NDUB, for the students to learn more about pursuing higher studies abroad. The session was conducted by Brian O'Conchubhair, PhD, Director, Centre for the Study of Languages and Cultures (CSLC), Associate Professor of Irish Language and Literature, University of Notre Dame, Indiana (USA) along with Maggie Vosters, MA Assistant Director, CSLC, and Lisa Joy Oglesbee, MA Coordinator of English for Academic Purposes, CSLC.

This event was presided over by Fr Tom McDermott, CSC, Director, NDUB Language Centre and Professor Dr Fr Patrick Gaffney, CSC, Vice Chancellor, NDUB, attended this session as the chief guest.

 The keynote speaker Brian O'Conchubhair guided the in the process of applying for universities abroad, starting from completing applications to securing a scholarship. "If you want to go for higher studies abroad and do not have enough funds to support your education, just look for universities which do not ask for application fees," he said. "Furthermore, look into their websites and see if they are offering tuition waivers or full bright scholarships. In order for you to secure a scholarship, make sure your essay explains your reasons for getting a scholarship strongly."

He also spoke about the importance of language proficiency, mentioning how letters with sub-standard grammar and informal wording is rejected during the initial steps of the review process.

The session, which concluded with a vote of thanks by Fr Tom, was followed by the inauguration of the NDUB Language Centre by Habiba Akter, Programme Director, NDUB Language Centre, and the other guests.
