Bangladesh shines at International Junior Science Olympiad 2019

Team Bangladesh has won four silver and two bronze medals in the 16th International Junior Science Olympiad 2019 held in Doha, Qatar. International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) is a science competition for school students aged 15 or under. It aims to promote science by exposing students to problem solving, allowing critical thinking and experimentation beyond the scope of the school syllabi. IJSO is held in the first week of December every year, in different countries. Under the slogan, "Motivating today's Young Generation for the Skills of Tomorrow", around 70 countries participated in the Olympiad this year.

The competition is broken down into three tests, each of which lasts between three to four hours. The theoretical portion consists of two tests: a multiple choice questionnaire comprising of 30 questions and a theoretical exam. The practical portion includes three laboratory examinations, one for each field of science. These tests explore a student's understanding of concepts, clarity and the ability to apply these concepts to the situations described.

Abhishek Majumdar from Bir Shrestha Noor Mohammad Public College, Muhtasin Al Kafi from Barishal Cadet College, Kazi Tasfia Zahin from Muminunnesa Women's College and Zakia Tajnur Chowdhury from Blue Bird School and College were the silver medalists, while Zuhayer Mahdiul Alam Ashfi from Mymensingh Zila School and Ahmed Al Zubayer Anam from Green Field International School and College won the bronze medals.

The General Secretary of Bangladesh Science Popularity Association and the team's Coordinator, Professor Farsim Mannan Mohammadi was elated by the remarkable performance of the team this year, while Professor Farhana Mannan, their team leader, and Mahmud Mim, Coordinator of Bangladesh Junior Science Olympiad (BDJSO), also extended their best wishes.

The 17th season of IJSO will be hosted in Germany in December 2020.
