TRENDING THIS WEEK

Trump's Inauguration

The social media world was ablaze on the 20th of this month when Donald J. Trump was sworn in as the 45th President of the United States of America. Newspapers across the globe, for example the Independent UK, put up titles like 'So Help Us God'. Facebook, Twitter and everything in between had opinions scattered throughout about what is to come. A mix of fear and anxiety gripped the American society and the rest of the world alike. But can we really tell the future? We have to wait and watch.

The Tension with RAB

The much awaited verdict of the Narayanganj seven-murder case was finally issued by Narayanganj District and Session Judge's Court on 16th January. The verdict awarded death penalty to 26 of the perpetrators 25 among whom are the members of the elite law enforcement agency Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). Different government organisations and RAB's current Director General have stated that the verdict did not tarnish the image of a disciplined force like RAB. However, human rights organisations around the world have been questioning RAB's involvement in extra-judicial killings for long since. Recently, Human Rights Watch reiterated its appeal to disband RAB stating that this agency has been used often times as an in-house death squad.

Women's March

Trump's inauguration was almost overshadowed by the women's march that took place the day after. Celebrities, citizens, people from all walks of life, of all ages took part in this historic event where they brought up issues of all kinds, to tackle them and to stay united. Facebook and Twitter are still giving updates and motivational statuses about the event. Slogans were flying across the United States and the rest of the world where not only violence against women were being discussed, but also Islamophobia and other important issues of today.
