Proper safety for women remains a far cry

Ensuring proper safety for women remains a far cry as women still face harassment and ignominious behaviour when outside on the streets. Everyday, school and college-going girls and working women—particularly garment workers—are victims of such treatment. The latest incident where a young woman was harassed while commuting after midnight has again proved that there is hardly any security for women and girls outside. The video of the young woman being harassed by the policemen is in direct contradiction of the duty of law enforcers, who are supposed to be mercurial in ensuring safety for women. They instead shone a torch in her face and questioned her character and even threatened to take her away if they wished. Is it an offence for young women or girls to travel alone after midnight? The authorities however have issued a statement that they have been able to identify the policemen who were harassing the young woman. They should be suspended for their shameful behaviour.
