"Sankar aspires to be a famous artist. His creations are ingenious and promising"— Sankar Dhar made the headlines first in 1974 in the Daily Sangbad, at 16 years of age, when he was a student of class ten at Pogose High School, next to Banglabazar. Even today, the 62-year-old is considered a maestro, especially when it comes to creating statues of Goddesses. His almost paralysed leg (he was affected by poliomyelitis in the second year of his birth, which had thinned his left leg), financial instability and social barriers could not insulate him from his firm determination. And this determination, in combination with numerous thought-provoking creations (with clay, terracotta, metallic, cement and wooden), brought him wide recognition.
