FIVE THINGS

5 Street Foods Essential for Winter

While an abundance of street food is readily available throughout the year, there are some delectable munchies that only suit the chilly breezes of winter. Roaming the streets of Dhaka, you will come across numerous stalls that are only there for the season. Here are 5 street foods that you absolutely must-try this winter.

Pitha (rice cakes): This is quite obvious. You live in Bangladesh, you face winter, and you have pitha. It's kind of a rule. The various bhortas are lip-smackingly delicious, and when paired with the soft as cotton Chitois, it's a match made in heaven. And then there are the warm, sweet and soothing Bhapa pithas which can almost instantly help you beat the chills.

Bhutta (Corn on the Cob): With the season inviting the presence of corns, they are found in every corner of the street- both boiled and char-grilled. While they can be a menace to your teeth, who really cares when the warm juices go down your throat and give you that inner hug that you need in winter?

Chicken Soup: Okay, this item is found everywhere anyway- restaurants, homes, this and that. But those on the street carts are just better somehow (don't tell your mothers I said that). It's basically chicken and egg broth, with an abundance of chilli (you can tone it down according to your need). Along with this, they serve chutney to die for.

Khejur er Rosh (Date juice): Dates are widely known for their health benefits. Along with their delicious sweet taste, they are said to give you instant energy and with instant energy comes a warm, snugly inner feeling. So why not have a glass or two while you're freezing on your rickshaw ride home?

Chaa (tea): While this is available all throughout the year, winter is the best time to really take the time out and enjoy it. Shivering with your friends, you can sit at any corner of any streets and feel the liquid heat you up from the inside out. There are also various kinds- malta chaa, ovaltine chaa, ada chaa, gurer chaa and a Bangalee concoction of tea and coffee- chafee!

This winter, roam the streets like Kings and Queens, because now you know just want to pop in your mouth the minute the chills start getting to you!
