Where Netaji used to come for sherbet

The time was just before the Subcontinent became independent. Kolkata was alight with the fire of revolution. Doing anything openly against the British rulers was nearly impossible.

At that time, Nihar Ranjan Majumder, a member of the then Barisal Onushilon Samiti, set up a little shop called Paradise Serbet. Later known as Paramount Serbet, the shop became a secret meeting place for revolutionaries.

Paramount Serbet is one of the oldest shops in Kolkata. On hot summer days, people still go there for a glass of sherbet.

The name Paramount resonates with Old Kolkata, College Street, College Square, North Kolkata, Kolkata University, Hindu School, and so on. Watch the story of Paramount's sherbet in today's Star Special.
