Soldiers of sanitation: what can policymakers do?

In exchange for their daily combat -- in unhygienic, hazardous and exhausting working conditions -- to keep Dhaka city clean, sanitation and waste workers get unsustainable wages, social stigma and absence of proper health support.

Is there any policy readjustment that can effectively change their plight? Or is the problem rooted in lack of implementation?

The Daily Star, WaterAid Bangladesh and the Embassy of Sweden have come together to start a campaign for these unsung heroes: The Untold Stories of Sanitation and Waste Workers. On this installment of the campaign, Debjani Shyama is joined by Shahidul Islam, Governance Advisor, SNV Netherlands Development Organisation, and Dr Mahfuzul Haque, former Secretary, Government of Bangladesh to discuss what can policymakers do to improve the condition of sanitation and waste workers.
