Sreepur upazila polls suspended

The Election Commission has suspended Sreepur upazila election in Gazipur citing lack of congenial atmosphere for fair polls.
Election Commissioner Shah Nawaz told The Daily Star that the EC has taken the decision because of congenial atmosphere for a free and fair election is currently absent there.
The election was scheduled to be held on March 15 along with 82 other upazilas across the country in third phase.
A BCL leader died in the wee hours of today, two days after he was hit by a bullet during a clash between the supporters of Awami League-backed chairman candidate and the rebel candidate in the upazila.
Al Amin Sheikh, 21, assistant secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), Sreepur upazila unit, breathed his last at Apollo Hospital in the capital around 12:00midnight.
At least 50 people including Al Amin were injured and eight vehicles were burnt during the clash on March 8 that lasted for about four hours.
Meanwhile, Al Amin's father Abul Hossain today filed a case accusing 60 people -- 35 named and the rest unnamed, our Gazipur correspondent reported quoting Amir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sreepur Police Station.
