West Indies recorded a comprehensive 72-run win against Shahid Afridi-led World XI in the lone Hurricane Relief T20I at Lord’s yesterday, where Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal failed to make any impact in the one-sided affair.

Opening the innings for World XI, who were chasing a daunting 200 for win, Tamim was dismissed for two in the second over. He was caught brilliantly at cover by Evin Lewis, who dived high to his left to pocket a blinder.

The star-studded World XI lost four wickets for eight runs in 3.3 overs from where they had never recovered despite a battling 61 by Tishara Perera. The World XI were bowled out for 127 with 20 balls to spare.

Earlier, sent into bat, West Indies rode on a fine 58 by opener Lewis to post a commanding 199 for four. After Chris Gayle departed for 18, Lewis and Marlon Samuels (43) rebuild the innings. Lewis smashed five sixes and as many boundaries in his 26-ball blitzkrieg. In an innings where the West Indies batsmen hit more sixes than fours, Samuels struck four. Dinesh Ramdin and Andre Russell provided the late fireworks. Ramdin struck three sixes in his 25-ball 44 not out.

Russell smashed three sixes – all against leg-spinner Rashid Khan in the penultimate over, for an eight-ball unbeaten 21. Rashid finished the match with two for 48, most expensive among the World XI bowlers.

The contest has been arranged as a fundraiser in the wake of two devastating natural disasters in the Caribbean eight months ago.
