Windies on top as lacklustre Tigers all out well before stumps on Day 1

Bangladesh would be thoroughly disappointed with the way their first innings went on the opening day of the second and final Test against the West Indies at the Darren Sammy Stadium in Gros Islet, Saint Lucia today.

After a promising start -- 68 for one at one stage and Liton Das scoring a fifty later -- the Tigers were still bundled out for 234 after batting 64.2 overs on what looks like a good batting surface.

In reply, the hosts raced to 67 at stumps after batting 16 overs. Both their openers -- Kraigg Brathwaite and John Campbell -- reached thirties before play was called off. The West Indies now trail by 167 runs and would be eyeing a massive lead tomorrow.

Earlier, as Liton and Mehedi Hasan Miraz resumed after Tea on 159 for six, Bangladesh were banking on their last recognised batting pair for a big partnership. However, Miraz joined the Bangladesh top-order batters who failed to put a price tag to their wickets.

Miraz (9) fell in the second over after Tea as he attempted an upper cut off a Kyle Mayers delivery towards the point area but substitute fielder Devon Thomas was there to grab a breath-taking diving catch while running towards his left.

Liton Das brought up his 14th half-century of his Test career off 66 balls with a superbly struck lofted drive for a boundary. Liton hit eight fours and looked his elegant self throughout his stay in the middle.

However, he departed shortly while trying to manufacture a pull shot off a good-length delivery from Alzarri Joseph, only to find the lone fielder in Kraigg Brathwaite at mid-on.

Bangladesh, in the end, were able to go past 200 score courtesy of Shoriful Islam, who kept swinging his bat for a few boundaries. The left-armer became the joint-third top scorer of the innings as his cameo ended on 26 off 17.

Number 11 Khaled Ahmed came and went and Ebadot Hossain, who had scored only 12 runs from 26 outings, pulled of his highest score by a margin and remained unbeaten on 21 off 35.

From the Windies part, it was a total team effort from their fast bowlers. Only Kemar Roach missed out on taking a wicket but Joseph, Seales each scalped three while Myers and Anderson Philip picked two apiece.
