Young Mahmudul Hasan Joy played an unbeaten knock of 70 as Bangladesh spent a perfect day at Mount Maunganui on the second day of the first Test against New Zealand today.

The right-handed opener saw off 211 deliveries to score 70 runs, featuring seven boundaries as Bangladesh ended the day at 175 for two after dismissing the hosts for 328 in their first innings. Although Joy didn't look convincing all the time, he grafted it out and made sure Bangladesh did not lose the initiative which was earned by the bowlers in the morning.

Skipper Mominul Haque was at the crease, unbeaten on eight off 27 deliveries, after Najmul Hossain Shanto (64) fell to Neil Wagner in the last hour of play. The elegant left-hander played a much more aggressive innings than Joy, whacking seven fours and a six during his 109-ball stay.

Wagner was the only successful bowler for the Kiwis as he had earlier got rid of Shadman Islam (22) during the 67 overs bowled by the hosts.

Bangladesh are still 153 runs behind the hosts with eight wickets remaining at the end of the second day.

Earlier, Mehedi Hasan Miraz took three wickets while Mominul and Shoriful Islam took one each as New Zealand added 70 runs for the last five wickets on the second morning of the first Test.
