Serena named GQ's Woman of the Year

Serena Williams has been named as GQ magazine's "Woman of the Year", celebrated with a special front cover.

This is the 23rd year in which the publication has honored a group of public figures for their achievements; in its early incarnations all the awardees were men.

Williams is named in this year's quartet alongside actors Michael B Jordan, Jonah Hill, and Henry Golding.

The magazine describes her as "a tennis legend", and will publish an interview with her reflecting on her "remarkable year". Williams returned from maternity leave this year and reached the final of both Wimbledon and the US Open.       

Joe Cole hangs up his boots

Former England and Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole has announced his retirement from football on Tuesday, bringing the curtain down on a 20-year professional career.

The 37-year-old made 716 appearances and scored 104 goals for seven clubs and completed his career with Tampa Bay Rowdies in the United Soccer League.

"After 20 years as a professional, the time has come for me to hang up my boots," Cole, who came through West Ham United's youth system, said in a statement. "It has been a dream come true. All of it."

Cole made his debut at West Ham aged 17 and became captain four years later. He went on to win every domestic honour at Chelsea after joining the club in 2003, including three Premier League titles and two FA Cups.                

Zimbabwe Cricket to be liquidated?

The saga between the Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) and former national team coach Heath Streak, who is pushing for the liquidation of the organisation, took another twist after the Sports Commission withdrew their opposition of the process at the High Court.

The Sports Commission, who were named as the third respondents in the case, had filed a Notice of Opposition with the High Court last month. But the organisation have withdrawn their opposition.

Streak's lawyers cited Zimbabwe Cricket as the first respondents and the newly installed Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Kirsty Coventry as the second.  The Sports Commission and the Master of High Court are the Third and Fourth Respondents.    

Shaons beat Josephites

The Shaons beat Josephites by 72-50 points in the Unimed Unihealth Pharmaceuticals First Division Basketball League at the Dhanmondi Wooden Floor Gymnasium yesterday.

The Shaons led the first half by 38-19 points. Christopher caged highest 24 points for the winning side while Shuvo netted 25 points for Josephites.

Earlier on Monday night, The Shaons had beaten Wraiths by 65-37 points while Josephites had outplayed Cantonians by 56-35 points. 

Beach football tournament underway

Youngman Club edged past Bashkata Club by 3-2 goals in the opening match of the Walton 5 th Beach Football Tournament in Cox's Bazar yesterday.

A total of eight teams from Cox's Bazar district are taking part in the three-day tournament.
