Navy retain Shaheed Smriti Hockey title

Bangladesh Navy registered an easy 3-1 victory in the final over Bangladesh Army to retain the title of Shaheed Smriti Hockey tournament at the Maulana Bhasani Hockey Stadium yesterday.

It was also the second title on the trot for Bangladesh Navy, who skipped the President's Club hockey tournament in November last year after the game returned following the coronavirus-induced break.

Navy, who had national players like Rasel Mahmud Jimmy, Roman Sarkar, Khorshedur Rahman, Ashraful Islam, Farhad Ahmed Shitul and others in their ranks, did not face much trouble to overcome tough Army, who once again had to stay content with a second-place finish for the second time this season since their 2-3 drubbing at the hands of the BHF Green Eleven in the President's Cup final.

Navy, who beat Army 1-0 in group stage, went ahead in the 27th minute with a strike from Jimmy before Khorshedur Rahman converted a penalty corner to double the lead in the 37th minute.

Army's Manos Babu converted a penalty corner to make it 2-1 in the second half but Roman Sarkar's late strike ensured Navy's triumph.
