Boby Hamid no more

Former national handball player Shahjahan Hamid, popularly known as Boby Hamid, died of brain cancer this morning at the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka. He was 56.

Boby – younger brother of popular national footballer Kaiser Hamid and illustrious chess player Rani Hamid – left his wife, two daughters and plenty of well wishers to mourn his death.

"He had long been suffering from brain cancer which was identified at the fourth stage last year. Boby had recently undergone treatment for one-and-an-half month at the Apollo Hospital before coming home as doctors advised to have an operation," Kaiser Hamid told The Daily Star.

"However, [Boby's] conditions didn't improve despite going through 22-24 chemotherapy sessions and today he left us."

Boby Hamid also played football at the top level for Brothers Union and Wari Club before calling time in 1992 following injury.

"I can't remember the year exactly, it could be 1991, Wari beat Mohammedan SC 1-0 with a strike from Boby and I played for Mohammedan SC. Boby struck the goal with a shot from outside the box.

"He played as attacking midfielder but he could not extend his football career due to injury but he played for the national handball team," recalled Kaiser.

Boby Hamid's funeral prayers will take place at the DOHS mosque in Banani in the afternoon today, following Asr prayer, and he will later be laid to rest at Banani graveyard, informed Kaiser Hamid.
