Guptill smacks WC high with double ton
Martin Guptill of New Zealand whacked his bat through the cricket record book today to become the highest scoring man in a World Cup match.
He became the first New Zealander, fifth man in the world and the second in a World Cup match to have scored a double century today.
His unbeaten run of 237 flattened West Indies and helped New Zealand pile a mammoth total of 393 runs in the fourth World Cup 2015 quarterfinal match at Wellington.
His innings constituted of twenty four boundaries and eleven sixes to the amazement of the home crowd getting wild and wilder as his innings progressed.
The previous highest score in a World Cup belonged to Chris Gayle, 213, of West Indies – that too in this World Cup tournament against Zimbabwe in Pool B match.
Guptill joined the elite club of double-centurions in ODI cricket and became the fifth batsmen after Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma and Chris Gayle.
Guptill's 237 is the second highest score in a ODI – next best to India's Rohit Sharma, 264, against Australia in 2014.
With his remarkable effort, Martin Guptill becomes the second highest run-getter in this ICC Cricket World Cup with 498 runs behind Kumar Sangakkara's 541.
