Injury-hit Abahani defeated Chennaiyin FC in a crucial Group E encounter at the Bangabandhu National Stadium today.

Six-time professional league champions Abahani were three points behind Chennaiyin FC with four points from three outings and in a do-or-die situation, needing a win to stay in the race to make the nexta round for the first time in the club’s history.

It was an exciting game and Chennaiyin started the scoring in the sixth minute as C.K. Vineeth found the left bottom corner with a right footed shot.  The first-half ended 1-0 to Chennaiyin before Abahani equalised via Kervens Belfort’s effort in the 64th minute. Masih Saighani doubled Abahani’s lead in the 69th minute only to see parity restored by Isaac Vanmalsawma’s (Chennaiyin) right-footed shot from the centre of the box to make it 2-2.

Mamunul Islam found the winner in the 88th minute. The win means Abahani are level on points with Chennaiyin but behind on goal difference.
