BFF suspends BPL at the last minute

The desperation to resume the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) amid the countrywide lockdown has brought the professionalism of the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) into question.

On Friday, the game's governing body suspended the league just less than two hours before the scheduled start time of the matches -- Brothers Union vs Rahmatganj MFS and Uttar Baridhara Club vs Chattogram Abahani -- and 18 hours after the announcement of the resumption of BPL, which was suspended on July 23 upto July 30 due to the lockdown.

"The professional football league management committee today [July 30] decided to suspend the league matches temporarily. The committee will soon take the decision to resume the league after evaluating the existing situation," said a BFF statement just one hour before the start of scheduled matches at the Bangabandhu National Stadium and Birshreshtha Shaheed Mostafa Kamal Stadium.

But by the time BFF announced the suspension, all four teams were already on their way to their respective venues for the scheduled matches.
Later, two clubs returned to their club tents while the remaining two teams participated in training sessions.

A source inside BFF confirmed that they had taken all preparations to hold the matches after getting the green signal from the government authorities, which later asked them to refrain from holding the matches.

BFF had previously held matches on July 1 amidst the lockdown. However, they suspended the league a day after, citing the grounds were unplayable due to heavy rain.
