Bayern gain revenge but PSG win group

Bayern Munich's French midfielder Corentin Tolisso celebrates after scoring the 3-1 during the UEFA Champions League football match of Bayern Munich vs Paris Saint-Germain

Corentin Tolisso struck twice as Bayern Munich avenged September's defeat at Paris Saint-Germain with a 3-1 victory in Bavaria on Tuesday, but the French side finished top of Group B.

With both teams already through to the last 16, Bayern needed to win by four goals to usurp PSG having lost 3-0 at the Parc des Princes.

Bayern raced into a 2-0 half-time lead thanks to goals by Robert Lewandowski and Tolisso.

Kylian Mbappe calmed the visitors' nerves just after the break before Tolisso scored a superb third for Bayern.

The result means the big-spending Parisians finish as group winners with a better goal difference across the two head-to-head matches, while Bayern restored pride as they matched PSG's tally of 15 points.

It was a second straight defeat for Unai Emery's PSG after a 2-1 loss at Strasbourg in Ligue 1 on Saturday, having started the season with a 21-match unbeaten run in all competitions.

Bayern set about settling the score in determined fashion at Munich's Allianz Arena.

Under Jupp Heynckes, who coached Bayern to the 2013 treble, the Germans look a different side to the one outplayed by the French league leaders in the loss which led to Carlo Ancelotti's dismissal.

The hosts took the lead after just eight minutes when Franck Ribery's pass released James Rodriguez down the left.

The Colombian's cross was headed towards goal by Kingsley Coman and Lewandowski turned and slammed his shot past PSG goalkeeper Alphonse Areola to the delight of the home crowd, after Dani Alves played him onside.

Bayern started taking control of possession and the away defence became decidedly jittery when Tolisso doubled the lead just before the break.

Rodriguez again did the damage with a cross from the left and the French midfielder hammered his header past Areola.

Just as Bayern fans were starting to believe in the dream 4-0 win, PSG pulled a goal back shortly after the restart.

Marco Verratti started the move, floating a pass into the penalty area where Edinson Cavani controlled the ball and picked out Mbappe, who made no mistake with his header.

With belief flowing through the visitors' ranks, Mbappe forced Bayern goalkeeper Sven Ulreich into a good save as PSG attacked in waves.

Coman created Bayern's third goal as he sprinted clear of Alves and squared the ball to an unmarked Tolisso, who hit his shot cleanly past Areola.

However, Bayern's double goal-scorer was lucky to stay on the pitch during an attack in the area soon after.

Having already seen a yellow card in the first half, Tolisso clearly dived as Areola slid for the ball.

Referee Cuneyt Cakir waved away the furious protest by Alves and Tolisso stayed on the pitch to help Bayern close out the win.

Draxler and Rabiot demand more after defeat

Midfielders Julian Draxler and Adrien Rabiot said Paris Saint-Germain must improve for the Champions League knockout phase after falling to a 3-1 defeat at Bayern Munich.

Corentin Tolisso struck twice as Bayern gained a measure of revenge for September's 3-0 defeat in Paris with a comfortable victory at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday in their final group game.

With both teams already through to the last 16, Bayern needed to win by four goals to usurp the French side from first place in the group.

Despite the defeat, the big-spending Parisians finished as Group B winners with a better goal difference across the two head-to-head matches.

However, the German champions restored pride as they matched PSG's tally of 15 points.

Bayern raced into a 2-0 half-time lead thanks to goals by Robert Lewandowski and Tolisso.

Kylian Mbappe calmed the visitors' nerves just after the break before Tolisso scored a superb third for Bayern.

PSG will go into the pot for Monday's draw as group winners, but Rabiot says they must improve following a second consecutive defeat after the Ligue 1 leaders lost 2-1 at Strasbourg last weekend.

"It's true that we have work to do because we need to play better in this type of match," said the defensive midfielder.

"We did some good things, but there's quite a lot we have to correct. We played too much as individuals and not enough as a team.

"When we played as a team, we were dangerous and could have scored more goals but weren't clinical enough.

"When we try to do everything on our own, it doesn't work."

- Blank for Neymar -

Neymar had a quiet night, goalless in Munich despite scoring in all of the five previous group games.

However, PSG coach Unai Emery is backing the Brazilian star to refind his touch.

"Neymar? I am calm, I know that he will progress in this team, he has the quality for that," said Emery.

Germany international Draxler admitted PSG were not as good as in September's 3-0 win when they outplayed the Bavarians by some distance.

"In the first half, we didn't play as well as we had in Paris, so Bayern were superior," said the World Cup winner.

"Bayern did well, you can see that they are one of the best teams in Europe.

"We are unhappy about the defeat, but are pleased to have won the group."

Carlo Ancelotti was sacked as Bayern coach in the wake of the humbling defeat at PSG and Bayern replaced him with Jupp Heynckes, who coached them to the 2013 treble.

"This was a real team effort. We did exactly what we set out to do and were tactically very clever," beamed Heynckes.

The 72-year-old pulled a few surprises before kick-off, leaving out Germany stars Jerome Boateng and Thomas Mueller, plus midfielders Javi Martinez and Arturo Vidal.

He gave Bayern some French flair by starting with Kingsley Coman and Franck Ribery on the wings while Tolisso was superb in attacking midfield.

"Coman's performance was no surprise for me - he always gives me reasons to start him," said Heynckes.

"Tolisso has continued to prove that he's an excellent footballer and a real goal threat.

"He trained outstandingly this week and there was no reluctance in my mind to start him."
