Symonds, aged 46, was involved in a single-car accident outside Townsville in Queensland state on Saturday night.

Players, former teammates and fans have taken to social media to share their devastation at the tragic news, which comes just two months after the deaths of fellow Aussie cricket greats Shane Warne and Rod Marsh.

"This really hurts," tweeted Adam Gilchrist, former Australian wicketkeeper and a long-time teammate of Symonds.

"Horrendous news to wake up to. Utterly devastated. We are all gonna miss you mate," wrote Aussie quick Jason Gillespie.

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan perhaps resonated with the feelings of most cricket lovers around the globe.

"Simmo .. This doesn't feel real," Vaughan tweeted.

"Devastated to hear about Andrew Symonds passing away in a car crash in Australia," former Pakistani cricketer and commentator Shoaib Akhtar wrote.
