New Zealand win Mirpur Test by four wickets

New Zealand drew the two-match Test series against Bangladesh 1-1 following a four-wicket victory in the second Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur today.

An unbroken 70-run partnership between Glenn Phillips (40*) and Mitchell Santner (35*) took the Kiwis across the line after they were in trouble having lost six wickets for 69 runs, chasing 137 for victory.

Glenn Phillips was the star for New Zealand with a valuable 87-run knock, which had helped the visitors take a slender lead in the first innings.

The hosts, meanwhile, will have their batters to blame who failed to take the initiative in either innings despite having the luxury of batting first on a deteriorating pitch.

New Zealand were 90 for six at Tea on the fourth day of the second Test in Mirpur, still needing 47 runs for victory to draw level in the two-match series. 

The wickets to fall were those of Tom Latham (26), Devon Conway (2), Kane Williamson (11), Henry Nicholls (3) and Tom Blundell (2), and Daryll Mitchell (19).

Taijul Islam took two while Mehedi Hasan Miraz took three wickets after Shoriful Islam had provided the early breakthrough for Bangladesh, who were bowled out for 144 runs in their second innings. 

Taijul Islam removed Kane Williamson with a vicious turning and bouncing delivery, getting the veteran New Zealand batter out stumped only for the second time in his career. Willimson (11) tried to get to the pitch of a ripping spinner from Taijul, but got completely bamboozled by the turn and bounce with Nurul Hasan doing smart glovework behind the stumps. 

Shoriful Islam gave Bangladesh the first breakthrough right after the lunch break, trapping Devon Conway LBW for two as New Zealand are 5-1 chasing 137 in the second session on Day Four of the second Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka today.

Kane Williamson now joins Tom Latham in the middle.

New Zealand need 137 runs, Bangladesh 10 wickets

New Zealand openers survived three testing overs from Bangladesh and headed into the lunch interval on four for no loss, chasing a target of 137 on Day Four of the second Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium today.

Shoriful Islam beat Devon Conway multiple times in the last over before the break but the left-hander survived the close calls. COnway is not out on one while his partner Tom Latham is batting on two.

Earlier, Bangladesh got rolled over for 144 in the second innings, with Ajaz Patel claiming a six-wicket haul.

Bangladesh set paltry target for New Zealand

Ajaz Patel claimed a six-wicket haul while Mitchell Santner took three wickets as Bangladesh got rolled over for 144 in their second innings in the morning session on Day Four of the Dhaka Test today.

Zakir Hassan's 59 was the lone bright spot for Bangladesh on a day the hosts could muster just 106 runs for their remaining eight wickets.

Shoriful Islam was the last batter to get dismissed, getting stumped off Ajaz, while Taijul Islam remained unbeaten on 14, which could prove to be a crucial knock on an unpredictable track at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

New Zealand now need 137 runs in a little over five sessions to level the two-match series 1-1.

Zakir's lone fight ends, Bangladesh close to capitulation

Zakir Hassan's lone fight came to an end when he became Ajaz Patel's fifth wicket in the innings as Bangladesh are now nine down with 128 runs on the board in the first session on Day Four of the Dhaka Test today.

Zakir, who made 59 off 86 balls, tried to sweep the left-arm spinner but top-edged the ball and got caught by Daryll Mitchell.

Bangladesh now have a 120-run lead. Taijul Islam, not out on six, has been joined by number eleven batter Shoriful Islam.

Zakir hits fifty as Bangladesh fight to push the lead

Zakir Hassan completed a valiant half-century while wickets kept tumbling at the other end as Bangladesh are now eight down for 114 on Day Four of the Dhaka Test today.

Zakir completed his 50 off 79 balls, the first half-century from a Bangladeshi in the match, with a single off Mithcell Santner.

Earlier in the over, Santner claimed his third wicket of the innings when he induced an outside edge to dismiss Nayeem Hasan for nine.

Bangladesh are now leading by 106 runs.

Bangladesh innings falling apart

Ajaz Patel struck twice in four deliveries to render Bangladesh seven down for 97 in the morning session on Day Four of the Dhaka Test today.

Mehedi Hasan Miraz was the first to go, as he took the bait of a flighted delivery from the left-arm spinner and hit the ball straight to a fielder to depart for three.

After defending his first ball, Nurul Hasan Sohan was adjudged LBW the following delivery but successfully reversed the decision with a review.

However, the wicketkeeper-batter then attempted a premeditated scoop shot against the spinner but got hit on the pads for a plumb LBW. Nurul reviewed the decision again, but this time the original decision of out was upheld.

Bangladesh have lost five wickets so far on thee day after resuming play on 38-2.

Kiwi spinners on the prowl

Mitchell Santner claimed his second wicket on the day by trapping Shahadat Hossain Dipu lbw as Bangladesh lose their fifth wicket for 88 in the morning session of Day Four of the Dhaka Test today.

Dipu tried to defend a delivery from the left-arm spinner but got struck on the pads instead and the umpire was quick to raise his index finger. Dipu reviewed the decision but the third umpire rightfully upheld the original call.

Santner earlier dismissed Mushfiqur Rahim after Ajaz Patel claimed the wicket of Mominul Haque.

Bangladesh suffer early losses on Day Four

Mitchell Santner outfoxed Mushfiqur Rahim, inducing an outside edge to claim the wicket of the veteran batter for nine as Bangladesh lost their fourth wicket in the second innings for 82 in the morning session on Day Four of the second Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka today.

Mushfiqur misjudged a delivery that held its line after pitching and ended up nicking the ball, which ricocheted off the keeper's pad and went straight into the hands of Daryll Mitchell at first slip.

Bangladesh batters have been trying to bat positively in the morning, trying to emulate how New Zealand's Glenn Phillips batted the previous day. But this approach has cost the side two wickets inside the first 40 minutes of the day.

Mominul's nervy stay at the middle ends

Bangladesh lost their third wicket as overnight batsman Mominul Haque departed for 16 on the morning session on Day Four of the second Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka today.

Mominul, who resumed the day's play on 0, had edged the ball behind the wicket twice before in the morning but had survived both times. The southpaw's edgy innings came to an end when he got wrapped on the pads by Ajaz Patel while trying to heave him over midwicket.

The Tigers have reached 72-3 after 16 overs, leading New Zealand by 64,

The overnight batter Zakir Hassan is batting on 34 and has been joined by the veteran Mushfiqur Rahim.

Bangladesh got off to a swift start on the day as both overnight batters looked keen to get on with their innings from the start, adding 33 runs off 42 balls together in the session before Mominul's dismissal.

The day's action began 9:15 am, to make up for some of the lost overs from the previous day and the washed out second day.

Bangladesh end gloomy Day 3 with slender lead

Bad lights brought an early end to the third day's play of the second Test between Bangladesh and New Zealand, with the hosts leading the visitors by 30 runs at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka today.

Opener Zakir Hassan is unbeaten on 16 and Mominul Haque is accompanying him at the other end, yet to get off the mark, as the Tigers have 38 runs on the board at the end of Day Three.

Bangladesh could bat just eight overs in the last session after New Zealand got bowled out at the cusp of tea break. The hosts have already lost the wickets of opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy (two) and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto (15).  

Earlier in the day, Glenn Phillips hit a brilliant counter-attacking 87 off 72 balls to power New Zealand to 180 and a slim eight-run lead.

The match is equally poised heading into the fourth day after no play took place on Day Two due to rain.

Bad light stops play after Bangladesh lose early wickets

Bangladesh lost the wicket of captain Najmul Hossain Shanto just minutes before bad light stopped play on the final session on Day Three of the Dhaka Test today.

Shanto, 15,  tried to loft a Tim Southee delivery over mid-off but could only hit it straight to Kane Williamson as Bangladesh lost their second wicket with 38 runs on the board.

New batter Mominul Haque blocked the last ball of the eighth over after which the umpires suspended play due to bad light.

The Tigers are now leading New Zealand by 30 runs.

Joy falls in first over

It took only three deliveries for Bangladesh to suffer a setback in their second innings as Ajaz Patel sent opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy back in the hut on the third session of Day 3 of the second Test in Mirpur today.

Joy (two) paid the price for tentatively poking at a Patel delivery, finding the outside edge to first slip where Daryl Mitchell grabbed it at the second attempt.

Bangladesh are 23 for one after five overs, leading by 15 runs.

With a lead of eight runs, the visitors unsurprisingly operated with two spinners -- Patel and Mitchell Santner -- with the new ball.

Earlier in the day, the home side bundled out the visitors for 180 after play resumed from the second session following four sessions of no action due to persistent bad weather.

Visitors 180 all out after Shoriful denies Phillips maiden ton

Glenn Phillips fell 13 runs shy of his maiden Test century but his valiant effort has the second and final Test between Bangladesh and New Zealand nicely poised at the stroke of Tea on Day 3 in Mirpur.

Playing in only his third Test, Phillips scored 87 off 72 balls with some powerful strokeplay to take his side past Bangladesh's first-innings total of 172.  

New Zealand will be pleased to reach 180 all out, leading by eight runs, after resuming proceedings from a precarious 55 for five.

Shoriful Islam was the one to dismiss Phillips, caught-behind to wicket-keeper Nurul Hasan Sohan. The left-arm pacer earlier struck to break a 55-run stand between Phillips and Kyle Jamieson.

Nayeem Hasan picked up the first two wickets that fell on the day while Taijul removed the final batter, New Zealand skipper Tim Southee (14). 

New Zealand lead as Phillips' aggression pays dividends

New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips' approach to take on the Bangladesh spinners has worked well for the visitors in the second session of Day 3 of the second and final Test in Mirpur today.

The visitors are 173 for eight after 35 overs, leading by one run. Phillips has quickfired his way to 82 off 67 balls, hitting eight fours and four sixes.

After Nayeem Hasan picked up overnight batter Daryl Mitchell and Mitchell Santner in quick succession, Phillips remained unfazed and continued with an aggressive mindset, as shown from the start of play today.   

Phillips found good company in Kyle Jamieson as the duo brought up a valuable 55-run partnership in quick time.

Shoriful Islam was introduced after 20 overs were bowled in the day. The left-arm pacer immediately impacted as Jamieson (20) edged to Shahadat Hossain Dipu at first slip.  

Miraz's brilliant fielding halts New Zealand counterattack

The second and final Test between Bangladesh and New Zealand finally resumed at Mirpur's Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium today after persistent bad weather washed out four sessions following the close of opening day.

The visitors are 98 for seven after 24 overs in their first innings, still trailing by 74 runs.   

As action began from the second session of the third day, with the visitors on 55 for five, New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips showed urgency from the start, unsettling Mehedi Hasan Miraz with three boundaries and a six in his first three overs of the day.

Bowling in tandem with Miraz from the other end was Taijul Islam who operated with an immaculate line and length.

Phillips went on to welcome Nayeem Hasan with a six over deep-square leg but the off-spinner bounced back in the same over, removing overnight batter Daryl Mitchell (18 off 39).

Mitchell's dismissal, however, was more down to Miraz who he ran quite a distance from long-on to take a superbly judged catch.    

Nayeem returned in the next over to remove Mitchell Santner (1), caught at first slip. 

Play to start at 12 pm on Day 3 

The first session of the third day of the final Test of the two-match series between Bangladesh and New Zealand will start at 12 pm at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Friday following a delay due to rain,

The action was scheduled to start at 9:15 am instead of a regular 9:30 am start to compensate for the overs lost on the first couple of days of the match but a drizzle in the early hours of Friday delayed proceedings once again. 

Not a single ball was bowled as rain disallowed any kind of action to take place on Day 2.

Not a single ball was bowled as rain disallowed any kind of action to take place on the previous day.

 Day 2 of Dhaka Test washed out

The second day's play has been called off due to persistent rain. 

There was not a single ball bowled on the second day, following an exciting opening day which saw the fall of 15 wickets, due to persistent rain owing to the aftereffects of Cyclone Michaung,

With better weather forecast for Friday, the organisers would want to squeeze in 98 overs of play tomorrow, with the day's play scheduled to begin at 9:15am.

A continuous drizzle from from the early hours of Thursday has delayed proceedings on the first session of the second day of the final Test between of the two-match series between Bangladesh and New Zealand at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

The action was supposed to start at 9:00 am instead of 9:30 am to compensate for the loss of overs on Day 1 due to bad light.

Miraz, Taijul have Kiwis cornered on Day One

Bangladesh spinners Taijul Islam and Mehedi Hasan Miraz have weaved their magic from the onset to have New Zealand reduced to 55-5 before bad light ended the opening day's play of the second Test in Mirpur today.

The visitors lost half their side after Miraz dismissed Kane Williamson (13) and Tom Blundell (0) in the span of three balls before bad lights stopped play in Dhaka.

Miraz finished the day with three wickets while Taijul took a couple, to took his wicket tally in home Tests to 151.

Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips are unbeaten on 12 and five respectively at stumps.

The Tigers are leading by 117 runs and are seemingly on their way to take a first innings lead.

Earlier the home side posted 172 all out in their first innings after electing to bat. 

Miraz, Taijul strike to remove New Zealand openers

Bangladesh spinner Mehedi Hasan Miraz removed New Zealand opener Devon Conway to give the hosts first breakthrough in the final session of the opening day of the second Test at Mirpur's Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium today.

The visitors reached 24 for two in seven overs after Taijul Islam, the destroyer-in-chief in Sylhet Test, removed the other opener Tom Latham.

Earlier, New Zealand spinners ran circles around the Bangladesh batters and rolled them over for 172 in the final session after the hosts elected to bat.

New Zealand spinners ran circles around the Bangladesh batters and have rolled them over for 172 in the final session of Day one of the second Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka today.

The hosts went into the final session with only two wickets in hand and it didn't take the visitors too long to wrap up the innings as Glenn Phillips trapped Taijul Islam (six) lbw and skipper Tim Southee got Shoriful Islam (10) caught behind.

The Kiwi spinners dominated the proceedings in the first innings, as Phillips and Mitchell Santner took three wickets each while Ajaz Patel claimed two.

Mushfiqur Rahim was the highest scorer for Bangladesh with 35 before becoming the first Bangladeshi to get out for obstructing the field in Test cricket.

Bangladesh go to tea with two wickets in hand

Mehedi Hasan Miraz became the eighth Bangladesh batter to depart in the first innings as the hosts head into the tea break of the opening day of the Dhaka Test against New Zealand with just 149 runs on the board today.

Miraz nicked a ball off left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner to the slip to depart for 20.

Bangladesh are now down to the tail-enders with Taijul Islam and Nayeem Hasan unbeaten on four each.

Miraz was the fourth Bangladeshi batter to depart in the session. Glen Pillips was the most successful bowler post-lunch for the Kiwis as he dismissed Shahadat Hossain Dipu and Nurul Hasan after Mushfiqur Rahim became the first Bangladeshi batter to get out for obstructing the field in Test cricket.

Nurul departs, Bangladesh lose their seventh

Bangladesh's troubles worsened as Nurul Hasan Sohan threw away his wicket for seven with a careless shot, leaving the hosts seven down for 135 in the second session of the Dhaka Test against New Zealand today.

Nurul came down the track to Glenn Phillips but miscued his lofted shot and got caught at mid-on.

Bangladesh have now lost three wickets in the post-lunch session.

Shahadat gone as Bangladesh lose their sixth wicket

Shahadat Hossain Dipu's resistance ended on 31 as Bangladesh lost their sixth wicket for 123 in the second session of the first day of the Dhaka Test today.

Shahadat, who faced 102 balls for his runs, got caught behind his leg off part-time spinner Glenn Philips. 

Nurul Hasan Sohan has now joined Mehedi Hasan Miraz, who is unbeaten on nine, in the middle.

Mushfiqur out for obstructing the field

Mushfiqur Rahim became the first Bangladeshi to lose his wicket for obstructing the field in Test cricket in the post-lunch session of Day one of the second Test against New Zealand in Dhaka today.

The incident occurred in the 41st over of the innings. Mushfiqur, batting on 35, defended a delivery from pacer Kyle Jamieson and then as the ball was going wide of the wickets he swatted it with his right hand even though it was not heading towards the wickets.

He becomes the eighth cricketer in Tests to get out in this way. 

Bangladesh lose their fifth wicket for 104.

Mushfiqur, Shahadat bat on as the score goes past 100

Mushfiqur Rahim and Shahadat Hossain Dipu have brought up their 50-run stand as Bangladesh have crossed the three-figure mark 11 overs into the post-lunch session on the first day of the second Test against New Zealand at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka today.

Mushfiqur and Shahadat are unbeaten on 34 and 21 respectively. Their partnership has reached 55 and Bangladesh have reached 103-4 after 39 overs in their first innings.

Bangladesh go to Lunch on 80-4 

Bangladesh batter Mushfiqur Rahim and Shahadat Hossain Dipu managed to prevent further damage as the hosts went to Lunch with 80 runs on the board for the loss of four wickets. 

Mushfiqur was responsible for 18 runs of the 33-run stand between him and Dipu, who scored 14 runs. 

Bangladesh opener Zakir Hasan and Mahmudul Hasan Joy were able to give the hosts a steady start with a 29-run stand having played a little over 10 overs between themselves but the duo departed in consecutive overs to the left-arm spin of Mitchell Santner and Ajaz Patel after scoring eight and 14 respectively.

A similar case unfolded with the next two batters --Najmul Hossain Shanto, and Mominul Haque, who were also dismissed in successive overs (14th and 15th) to leave the Tigers in trouble at four down for 47.

Patel and Santner picked up two each after the visitors decided to bring on the spinners following five overs of seam bowling despite the conditions being largely overcast.

Mominul, Shanto depart in quick succession 

Bangladesh batters Mominul Haque and Najmul Hossain Shanto departed in quick succession to have the hosts under pressure with four down for 47 after 15 overs in the morning session on Day 1 of the first Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Wednesday.

Mominul was dismissed in the 14th over after he managed five giving Ajaz Patel his second wicket, while Shanto, who scored nine, was trapped lbw after a failed attempt at a reverse sweep off the bowling of Mitchell Santner . .

Bangladesh lose both openers

Bangladesh opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy edged one to short-leg off the bowling off Ajaz Patel to leave the hosts at two down for 29 runs after 11 over in the morning session on Day 1 of the first Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Wednesday.

The right-handed batter scored 14 before his dismissal.

Joy's opening partner Zakir Hasan, who scored eight, was got himself dismissed an over before when he tried to take on Mitchell Santer for a big shot over the leg side. 

Zakir departs as Santner gives New Zealand first breakthrough 

Bangladesh opener Zakir Hasan was the first batter to depart when he skied one to mid on off the bowling of New Zealand's left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner in the morning session on Day 1 of the first Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Wednesday.

Zakir's dismissal brought an end to a 29-run opening stand with Mahmudul Hasan Joy, who remained unbeaten on 14.

The left-handed batter skipped down the wicket for a big shot but ended up top edging it to Kane Williamson. It was his third dismissal in the series to left-arm spin.  

Bangladesh to bat first against New Zealand in 2nd Test 

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and opted to bat first against New Zealand on the first day of the second Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Wednesday.

New Zealand brought in left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner in place of leg-spinner Ish Sodhi, while the hosts remained unchanged. 

Overcast conditions loom over the city today but Shanto said that the home side are familiar with such conditions and banked on their batters to bat responsibly to replicate their heroics from the Sylhet Test.

Bangladesh lead the two-match series 1-0 after they won the first match in Sylhet by 150 runs.
