A leaked email has reopened a controversial chapter in Indian cricket and shed more light on the messy power struggle between former India coach Anil Kumble and captain Virat Kohli.

The coach had stepped down in June this year, stating that differences with Kohli had made his position untenable. The email, which was published by ESPNcricinfo, claimed.

Kohli sent multiple text messages to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief executive Rahul Johri about his issues with Kumble.

Diana Edulji, a supreme court appointed Committee of Adminstrators (COA), opened up the controversial chapter which reveals that the BCCI had broken rules to appoint current coach Ravi Shastri as replacement. "Virat did not accede to Kumble continuing in spite of CAC saying so," Edulji wrote to the email that was allegedly sent on Monday to several BCCI officials.

"I see nothing wrong in women cricketers writing emails reg the coach. They were truthful in expressing their views unlike Virat who frequently sent sms's to the CEO on which you acted and there was a change,” Edulji was quoted as saying by the cricket website.

"Mr Kumble ... was subjected to loss of face and made to look like a villain," she wrote in the email.

"He was gracious enough to move on for which I respect him. Rules were broken and I had raised objections back then."

Kumble led the Indian team to four Test series wins against England, New Zealand, Australia and Bangladesh. He also led India to the finals of the ICC Champions Trophy in England.
