India post highest ODI total against Bangladesh
A rapid double ton from opener Ishan Kishan and another quickfire hundred from Virat Kohli powered India to the highest ODI total against Bangladesh in their third and final ODI at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram today.
Both Kishan and Kohli reached individual milestones as they helped India post a mammoth 409 for eight, the highest ODI total ever against Bangladesh, surpassing England's 391 for four in Nottingham in 2005. The total was India's fourth-highest ODI total and the highest ever in Bangladesh, surpassing 370 for four by India in Mirpur during the 2011 World Cup.
24-year-old Kishan smashed a double century off just 126 deliveries, becoming the quickest to the feat in the format. His 131-ball 210, laced with a total of 24 boundaries and 10 maximums, was also the first-ever double-century against Bangladesh.
Kishan also became the fourth Indian batter to score a double hundred in ODIs, after Rohit Sharma, Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag. India are the only team with multiple double centurions in the format.
Having already lost the three-match series 2-0, India came out all guns blazing in the final ODI today as they looked determined to avoid their first whitewash at the hands of Bangladesh.
Kishan led the charge from the front, dealing in boundaries all around the ground, especially since getting to his hundred off 85 deliveries. The left-hander only went on to up the ante since then, racing on to his next hundred off just 41 deliveries while smashing seven sixes and nine boundaries during that period.
Kishan also stitched a 290-run second-wicket stand off just 190 deliveries with Kohli. This also remains the highest stand for any wicket in ODIs against Bangladesh.
Kishan's carnage finally came to an end in the 36th over when the left-hander failed to clear the ground and was caught by Liton Das near the straight boundary line off a Taskin Ahmed delivery.
Kohli also brought up his 44th ODI ton off 85 deliveries, his first ODI century since August 2019. Playing in his 536th innings, it was also Kohli's 72nd international ton as he surpassed Australia's former skipper Ricky Ponting, who has 71 hundreds in 668 innings. In terms of most centuries in international cricket, Kohli only remains behind the legend Sachin Tendulkar, who has 100 tons from 782 innings.
Kohli was dismissed off a Shakib Al Hasan delivery in the 42nd over after a 91-ball 113.
With the foundation already laid for a massive total, some handy knocks down the order by Washington Sundar (37 off 27) and Axar Patel (20 off 17) helped India post a 400-plus total, the first time any team scored more tha 400 against Bangladesh in ODIs.
