BCB appoints Domingo as head coach

Russell Domingo

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed former South Africa coach Russell Domingo as the head coach of the Tigers. The 44-year-old South African has agreed a two-year term with the BCB and is expected to arrive in Dhaka on 21 August to take charge of the National Team. The post of the Bangladesh national team's head coach had been vacant since the board parted ways with Steve Rhodes after the disappointing World Cup.

Announcing the appointment BCB President Nazmul Hassan, MP said Domingo's vision for Bangladesh made him the ideal candidate for the role.

"He has a wealth of experience and we have been very impressed with his passion and coaching philosophy. He has a clear idea of what is required to take the team forward."  said the BCB President.

Domingo took over the role of head coach for South Africa's T20 side in 2012 before he replaced Gary Kirsten in the Tests and ODIs in 2013. He held that position till 2017, when he took over as coach of South Africa A and Otis Gibson replaced him as national team head coach.

Domingo said he was eagerly looking ahead to his new challenge.

"It is a massive honour to be appointed the Head Coach of the Bangladesh National Cricket Team. I have followed Bangladesh's progress with keen interest and I am extremely excited to assist the team in reaching the goals that they are capable of." said Domingo

"I look forward to continuing the ongoing development of current players whilst also looking towards the future and developing some new bright stars from within the talent pool of Bangladesh cricket." added the 44-year old.

BCB completed their search through a last batch of teleconferences with the shortlisted candidates on Wednesday. Ex-New Zealand head coach Mike Hesson was among the frontrunners for the Bangladesh job. However, BCB was unlikely to get his signature as Hesson was also strongly linked with the vacant Indian head coach job. Although BCCI has reappointed Ravi Shastri as the head coach of the Indian team yesterday, it was reported that BCB was unlikely to be affected by that decision.

Domingo gave an interview to the BCB earlier this month where the board officials were satisfied over his plan and vision during the presentation.
