West Indies fast bowler Joseph Alzarri has received a demerit point from ICC for his send-off signal to Bangladesh opener Anamul Haque during the second ODI at Guyana.

The ICC media release read: “The Windies fast bowler was found to have violated Article 2.1.7 of the code, which relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batsman upon his/her dismissal during an international match”.

Anamul was going strong as Bangladesh started their chase of West Indies’s 271 as he took the West Indies bowlers to cleaners in the early overs. His innings however lasted just 9 balls as after hitting two big sixes against Jason Holder, he was removed by Alzarri in the third over of the innings, out clean bowled.

The bowler celebrated by pointing to Anamul to get back to the pavillion. After the match, Joseph admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Chris Broad of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees and, as such, there was no need for a formal hearing.
