Compound team's surprising result

Bangladesh unexpectedly moved into the quarterfinals in compound mixed event of Archery World Cup before being eliminated at the hands of third-ranked Denmark in the last-eight battle in Berlin yesterday.

The Bangladesh team, comprising Bonna Akhter and Ashim Kumar Das, started the event as the 22nd-ranked side out of 23 teams, but they stunned 11th-ranked England in the first round with a score of 156-155 points despite trailing the first set by two points. They recovered in the second set of four shots each with a 77-77 point score before scoring 40 out of 40 in the third set to take a one-point overall lead. In the final set, both sides scored identical 39 points, leaving Bangladesh as the winners with one point.

In the second round, another surprising result was awaiting Bonna and Ashim, who edged past tournament's sixth-ranked Chinese Taipei despite trailing by two points at the close of the second set of four shots each. Bangladesh put up a strong performance in the last two sets to score 79 out of 80 to secure the victory by 155-153 points to advance into the quarterfinals.

However, the Bangladeshi duo could not overcome the quarterfinal hurdle. Like the previous two games, they made a poor start against third-ranked Denmark and never recovered before eventually losing by 147-157 points.

In the recurve team event, the Bangladesh team, comprising Roman Sana, Emdadul Haque Milon and Ibrahim Sheikh Rezwon, suffered a straight 0-6 defeat against Germany.
