World Chess Olympiad: BD men's team taste first defeat

After two successive victories at the 43rd World Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia, the Bangladesh men's team tasted their first defeat at the hands of Vietnam in the third round at the Sports Palace on Wednesday.

Bangladesh, who handed straight 4-0 defeats to Palau and IPCA in their first two matches, fell to the 27-seeded Vietnam, who inflicted an easy 3.5-0.5 defeat to the boys in red and green in the third round, with only GM Enamul Hossain Razib securing half a point following a draw against IM Nguyen Anh Khoi.

GM Ziaur Rahman, GM Abdullah Al Rakib and FM Fahad Rahman lost to GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, GM Le Quang Liem and GM Tran Tuan Minh respectively.

However, the Bangladesh women's team returned to winning ways by posting a 3.5-0.5 win over their Portugal counterparts.  WIM Shamima Akter Liza beat WFM Coimbra Margarida, WFM Sharmin Sultana Shirin beat Silva Mariana Sofia, WIM Rani Hamid beat Silva Ana Ines Teixeira Da while WFM Tanima Parveen drew with WFM Jorge Rita Maria Osorio.
