A Sri Lanka Cricket spokesperson informed that the Nidahas Trophy will go ahead as planned despite a nation wide emergency.

Following the spread of communal violence in Kandy, the Sri Lankan government declared a 10-day state of emergency. Hosts Sri Lanka are to take on India in the opening match of the tri-nation series today and since all the games will take place in Colombo, the tournament is not under threat.

The Sri lanka board official said that cricket will not be affected and the Nidahas Trophy will go on as scheduled.

The government decision to declare Emergency came after a Buddhist man was killed and a mob set fire to a Muslim-owned shop. In Sri Lanka, of its 21 million population, Buddhists Sinhalese make up nearly 75 percent, 13 percent of the population are Hindus while Muslims comprise around 10 percent.

Bangladesh play India on March 8 in the second match of the tournament.
