Who went where after DPL players’ draft
Following the completion of the Dhaka Premier League (DPL's) players' draft today, Mahmudullah Riyad ended up in Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club while left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman was acquired by Shinepukur Cricket Club. Mohammedan Sporting Club meanwhile managed to acquire the services of talented right-handed batsman Liton Das.
The players' draft took place on Monday at a five-star hotel in the capital. Each club were allowed to retain three players ahead of the draft. The likes of Mushfiqur Rahim and Tamim Iqbal had asked to be rested for this edition's Premier League in order to prepare for the World Cup while following his recent injury, Shakib Al Hasan's participation remains uncertain.
Among the national team players, Mahmudullah induced the most excitement today. He joined Sheikh Jamal in 'A plus' category will be available from April 6 upon conclusion of Bangladesh's tour of New Zealand. Abahani, who retained Mashrafe, took in Rubel Hossain at the beginning after they had the opportunity to call first. The reigning champions formed a strong side with many current and former national team players.
Umpiring in focus
The domestic circuit has seen an uprising of umpiring issues in recent times. The Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) chairman Kazi Inam Ahmed addressed the issue at hand.
"Last year we did not receive any complain regarding umpiring in the Dhaka Premier League. When there were complaints, we have sat down with CCDM members. We invited the chairman of umpires' committee.
"We have always requested high quality umpiring. Every ground has been provided camera facility to ensure that. Even our board president had mentioned that umpiring was something that 'we want to focus on'.
"We want ensure good quality of umpiring in all the leagues under CCDM. We have always discussed the matter with the media and I request you to go to the ground and watch the games. I am hopeful that if there are questions raised, the umpires' committee will look into it," he said.
Regarding the umpiring in first and second division, he said: When there is umpiring related enquiries, it depends on the captain's report. When it's there the umpiring committee looks into it. We have always forwarded that consistently from the CCDM. We have talked about development of umpires. We did receive some complains while other times the games have been governed well.
Local umpires having difficulty officiating in international matches has also come into the limelight recently. The board president and the umpires' committee are looking into it and reviewing the whole thing. They are trying to ensure clarity of umpiring for the future, " he concluded.
