Instances when Shakib made headlines for wrong reasons

Shakib Al Hasan getting entangled in controversies -- both on and off the field -- is nothing new, at least not to the regular followers of Bangladesh cricket. The premier all-rounder has been banned and reprimanded for his actions a number of times in the past. 

Shakib courted a new controversy by kicking stumps after umpire denied an LBW appeal shortly before uprooting the stumps and slamming them on the ground in a fit of rage umpire called for covers to be brought on due to rain during a Bangabandhu Dhaka Premier Division League game in Mirpur yesterday. 

Here, let's take a look at a few controversies that the 34-year-old allrounder has been involved in over the years.

Banned for three ODIs for making a lewd gesture

In February, 2014, in the second of the three-match ODI between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, Shakib made a lewd gesture towards the camera that was focused on him in the players' balcony soon after his dismissal for 24. He was also fined BDT 300,000 for "making an inappropriate gesture on live television". 

Suspended for six months from all forms of cricket

In July, 2014, Shakib was banned from all forms of cricket for six months for breaching rules. The decision came after the BCB received a "series of allegations" against the all-rounder that included the offences of going into the crowd and physically assaulting a spectator during an ODI against India in Mirpur. He had also left to play in the Caribbean Premier League without taking any NOC from the board just a few days prior.  

Shakib engages in verbal altercation with a fan

Then Bangladesh Test and T20I captain Shakib Al Hasan failed to keep his cool and engaged in a verbal altercation with a fan in the lobby of the team's Florida hotel after the T20I series win against West Indies in August, 2018. The altercation was captured on camera and the video subsequently went viral on social media. Shakib, however, had explained the reason behind his outburst through a long Facebook post, mentioning that "the clip does not convey the entire sequence of events and is shown out of context."  

Banned for two years for not reporting corrupt approaches

The International Cricket Council's (ICC) two-year ban on Shakib, with one of those suspended, announced in August, 2019, was certainly the severest blow to Bangladesh cricket till date. The premier all-rounder was suspended for not informing the ICC's anti-corruption unit (ACU) of three separate 'approaches or invitations' he received to engage in 'corrupt conduct' by a bookmaker seeking match information.

Shakib throws away selfie-seeking fan's phone

The ace all-rounder, who travelled to Kolkata via Benapole checkpost in November, 2020 after being included by The High Commission of India the day before as a part of their 'air bubble' arrangement with Bangladesh, threw away a fan's phone after the fan attempted to take a selfie. Considering the post-pandemic reality and the safety measures that come with it, Shakib's actions were somewhat understandable in this instance.
