TALK ON

After the first two days of the sixth edition of the Bangladesh Premier League witnessed low-scoring affairs, especially in the day games, the pitch has become the centre of all discussions. The fact that scores of 98 and 127 were chased till the last over reflects the slowness of the pitch. Below are a few observations on the Mirpur pitch from some of the players and a coach of participating teams.

History suggests that there will be low scoring games in Mirpur during this time of the year because the pitch is made of black soil. It is difficult to prepare good pitches and the curators also have to water the pitch. We actually don't expect a good wicket [during this season]. The wicket may look good but it is difficult for the batsman. As they have got some time we can hope for a better pitch than [what we had] during the first two days.

I think 130 is a challenging score. It was a difficult wicket to play your shots. Wickets in the nets are not the same as the middle. It is always difficult to get the idea especially in Mirpur, the wicket is unpredictable. We know that scores will be higher in Chittagong and Sylhet. You can score 170 to 200. But if you can get 150 here, it is always difficult for the opposition.

I didn't think it was going to be a cakewalk. The wicket got tougher and if you lose a few wickets early, it is tough. I don't think it was a 99 wicket, neither was it a 140 wicket. I think 120-125 would have been a good score. The ball gripped. It got a bit slower when we batted so it was quite tough to score freely.

The first six overs are going to be crucial for every team. They were five or six down for 30. We were in a similar position. The new ball is challenging, one turns and one doesn't turn. You have to be on your guard. You have to sit in your crease and look to rotate strike. I think the cross-bat shots are going to be challenging. You can almost defend 130.
