Competitive cricket to return with three-team tournament on October 11

The Bangladesh national team players along with HP Unit and selected members of U-19 World Cup squad are set to step back into competitive cricket through a three-team 50-over tournament on October 11, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced. All the matches will be played at Mirpur's Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium and the tournament will conclude with the final on October 23rd.

While many of the national cricketers have returned to training amidst the pandemic, competitive cricket in the country had been halted since mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic. The tournament is expected to provide leading and upcoming cricketers the opportunity for some quality competitive cricket in the current situation.

"We've formed three teams for the tournament on October 11 and the conditions we've set is that every player from each team must play at least two matches," BCB president Nazmul Hassan told reporters today.

"We feel the teams will be very balanced. We're looking to televise the final of the tournament and before that all the matches will be available on Live stream and on radio," Hassan informed.

While senior players were approached to take on the captaincy roles of each side, BCB president said that Mushfiqur Rahim 'confirmed that he didn't want to captain the side'.  

The three teams have been named after respective captains Mahmudullah Riyad, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Tamim Iqbal. Each team will face each other twice with the top two on points featuring in the final on 23 October. There will be reserve days for every match. To ensure health and safety standards for Covid-19, the players, support staff, match officials and relevant personnel including grounds and facilities staff will be placed in a bio-secure bubble for the tournament.
