Chandika Hathurusingha is on the verge of becoming the head coach of Sri Lanka, Cricbuzz report says.

According to the report, Chandika will visit his home country next week and is expected to take over as head coach after Sri Lanka's ongoing series against India. The report cites an unnamed SLC (Sri Lanka Cricket) official as source.

"We are happy that everything is working out well. He will arrive in Colombo next week and we can take things forward once he comes," the official said to Cricbuzz.

The official has also told Cricbuzz that negotiations are at an advanced stage and SLC have sent the draft of the contract to his lawyers.

"We are almost through and we are delighted," the official added.

Hathurusingha handed over his resignation in October and Sri Lanka's sports minister Dayasiri Jayasekar had previously admitted that he would like to see Hathurusingha become head coach of Sri Lanka.

This also means that Hathurusingha's first assignment as Sri Lanka head coach will be against Bangladesh.

Many of Sri Lanka's current crop of players like Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Mathews and Suranga Lakmal came through the 'A' team during Hathurusingha's tenure as coach.

Sri Lanka are currently without a coach since Graham Ford's departure after the ICC Champions Trophy in June. Sri Lanka were looking at Geoff Marsh and Jason Gillespie for the role of head coach. However, once Hathurusingha became available, the SLC decided to pursue their former 'A' team coach.
