Athlete-turned-organiser Hamida Begum passes away

Hamida Begum, a champion athlete of 1960s and a veteran sports organiser, passed away in Dhaka on Saturday morning.

National sports award winner Hamida was a revered name in athletics before independence when she used to rule the track and field events, especially excelling in hurdles.

Later, she turned into sports organising where she played role in various capacities including acting as additional director of National Sports Council, general secretary of Bangladesh Mohila Krira Shongstha, treasurer of Bangladesh Archery Federation, member of Bangladesh Olympic Association among others.

She was bedridden for the last four years following a stroke.

Her namaz-e-janaza will be held at the Handball Stadium in Paltan after asr prayers.
